White rice increases risk of type 2 diabetes

Diabetes is always related to the intake of foods rich in sugars or carbohydrates, but now also with white rice.

According to a study by scientists at the Harvard School of Public Health , published in the British Medical Journal , high consumption of white rice raises the risk of developing type 2 diabetes .

This information specifies that the results of four studies conducted in Asian and Western countries revealed that regular intake of a dish with a serving of 158 grams of white rice increases the risk of type 2 diabetes .

The researchers detail that for the study, the cases of 352,000 individuals residing in China, Japan, the United States and Australia, of whom none suffered from type 2 diabetes , were analyzed between four and 22 years.

When the results were reviewed, 13,284 cases of type 2 diabetes were detected, which shows that for each 158-gram portion, the risk of suffering from the disease increases by 10%; the association is clearer in women than in men.

This is because white rice, as a carbohydrate, is quickly converted into sugars, a process known as the Glycemic Index (GI), that is, blood glucose levels skyrocket .

A preventive way to suffer from type 2 diabetes is to replace white rice with a whole grain type, rich in fiber, magnesium and vitamins , making it useful for reducing constipation and promoting fat burning .
