What are the unrecognized symptoms of breast cancer?
Knowing how to spot the potential symptoms of breast cancer is important to quickly consult a doctor who can make a diagnosis. We interviewed Dr. Daniel Zarca, gynecologist and cancer surgeon, who listed the more or less unknown symptoms of breast cancer.
A lump in the breast...
A small lump or lump that has formed in the breast can be a sign of breast cancer. This mass may turn out to be a cyst or other benign lesion. She tends to get bigger. To identify a possible lump, Dr. Zarca advises to examine yourself regularly . "Every three months, we feel her breasts with your fingertips, everywhere by crushing the breast against the rib cage."
...or in the armpit
Same as for a lump in the breast; it is sometimes painful and varies in size. The doctor advises not to hesitate to press on the armpits with his fingers to check that no lump is formed, during a passage in the shower for example. If a lump in the armpit can turn out to be an inflammation of the lymph node or an abscess in the majority of cases, it can also be a sign of breast cancer.
A retracted nipple
If you notice that your nipple retracts inwards permanently without being able to move the nipple, this may be a symptom of breast cancer.
Abnormal secretions
A yellowish , or even blood-tinged fluid flows from only one nipple. In this case, it is necessary to do tests to diagnose a potential tumor.
Breast deformity
The chest is no longer as symmetrical as before. To see this, Dr. Zarca advises standing in front of a mirror. "We raise our arms gently and bring them back down. This movement will allow us to see a chest that is no longer as symmetrical as before and a breast that has changed shape compared to the other."
Skin retraction
A small hollow has formed, like a wrinkle . Even if this "fold" is very small, we do not hesitate to consult.
The texture of the nipple has changed
"A small scab has formed that looks like eczema . The area is red and may even be itchy." Describes the gynecologist and surgeon.
“ Breast pain is not necessarily a symptom, it is often due to the menstrual cycle ” specifies the specialist. "Most of the time, these symptoms are mild. But to be sure, it is imperative to consult. And obviously take into account the personal and family history" explains Dr. Zarca, who recommends to be extra vigilant if you have history of breast cancer.
A mammogram , an MRI and an ultrasound can detect possible benign or malignant tumours.
